Software is sometimes called the soul of a computer as it is the main way for hardware to run programs and applications. Several types of software exists for you to download and try, however remember always to scan any download with antivirus software before launching it on to your desktop.

Software is divided into two types: system software and application software. The former is often referred to as operating systems. Windows and MacOS are good examples of this. Application software could be anything from Word to iTunes, or even Mozilla Firefox.

“Software” is often used as a general term when speaking of anything in the computer sphere which is not hardware. Examples of software include the Internet, Windows Media Player and Safari on computers and “apps” on iPhones. These are often the most considered aspect when buying a new desktop, and rightly so as they are the very guts of your system.

Depending on your needs, whether you are a games fanatic or a design guru, you will most probably be looking out for the optimum way of running the software you choose to use. If games are your main passion then you will most definitely need a good graphics card – a cheap one would defeat the point. As a designer you will seek a fast, simple interface which can run programs like InDesign and Photoshop, as well as, store any images and page layouts you may create.

To keep your system running as smoothly as possible, you will also need a considerable back-drop of memory, and may consider investing in an extensive hard-drive system to host all your long-term files and necessary photo files. Your computer will be slower the more it is clogged up by files and documents, not to mention programs, which harbor immense amounts of data. External memory drives are the best way to keep your computer fresh and free of unnecessary accessories.
